 The
picturesque City of Coconut Creek is located in Broward County, South
Florida, nestled between Miami-Dade and Palm Beach Counties. Coconut
Creek is widely recognized as a well-planned community with a unique
environmental consciousness touting an abundance of trees, waterways,
attractive landscaped roads, beautiful parks, and butterfly gardens
throughout the neighborhoods. As the Butterfly Capital of the World,
Coconut Creek is home to the world's largest butterfly aviary, Butterfly
World; with over 80 species and 5,000 individual butterflies.Coconut Creek is the first in the State of Florida and eleventh in the country to be certified as a Community Wildlife Habitat. Butterfly World located in Tradewinds Park, Coconut Creek, Florida, is the largest butterfly park in the world and the first park of its kind in the Western Hemisphere, opening in 1988. Many years of careful planning and research have created the right conditions for thousands of butterflies to fly, court, feed and bask in the sunlight. You walk among them and enter their world. This world of butterflies is the result of Ronald Boender's hobby. Butterfly World opened in 1988 and consists of three acres of aviaries, botanical gardens, the butterfly farm and research facilities. The Aviary houses around 3000 live butterflies. The Paradise Adventure Aviary includes fountains with ponds, and butterflies. Next is the Hanging Garden & Butterfly Emerging Area where cases with hanging pupa and emerging butterflies are on display. The Tropical Rain Forest Aviary includes a waterfall, tropical plants, free flying birds and butterflies.  Grace
Gardens is an outdoor botanical garden with flowering tropical plants.
Also on the property is one of the largest collections of flowering
Passion Flower vines in the world, in the Wings of the World Secret
Garden. The Jewels of the Sky Aviary is where hummingbirds and other
birds can be seen. The Museum/Insectarium features exhibits of mounted
specimens of beetles, scorpions, butterflies, moths and other insects.
The Museum Insectarium at Butterfly World displays a few hundred of the
nearly countless insects of the world. The displays provide a close up
view of creatures you would probably never have the opportunity to see
in nature. The Bug Zoo displays live insects including water bugs, spiders, wasps, walkingsticks and mantids. Visitors can view the laboratory where the butterflies are raised and can see the different stages including eggs, caterpillar and pupa. One of the main goals of Butterfly World is to encourage visitors to take an active interest in their environment and the natural world. There are a series of workshops and seminars and butterfly gardening classes for beginners and advanced butterfly enthusiasts. The Butterfly World Museum Store is filled with hard-to-find butterfly and nature related books and gifts. And - the Butterfly Gardening Plant Shop carries a wide variety of butterfly attracting plants and vines guaranteed to turn your garden into a paradise for butterflies. Butterfly Gardening is fast becoming a nationwide, if not worldwide trend. It is a fun, educational activity that can have wonderful benefits both for the gardener and the environment. Because butterfly and plant species differ greatly by region, Butterfly World has established a North American "Bring Back the Butterflies Campaign", providing free printed plant guides for each geographic region within the continent. |
